St John's Church, Hartley Wintney
This church is situated at the edge of an ancient oak common, on rising ground above the picturesque village of Hartley Wintney, and within the Central Hartley Wintney Conservation Area. Wishing to avoid the many difficulties encountered during previous attempts to extend, the church approached CPL Architects to determine a realistic brief, and to negotiate with the Hart District Council. The resulting proposals received planning approval in 2009, and the building works were completed in late 2013. The new facilities provide a variety of good quality teaching spaces, dedicated areas specifically for youth work, and major new halls for both church and community use. In addition, the new building includes a coffee bar with terrace overlooking the common, whilst the space created between the extension and the existing building provides a secure all weather play area for both nursery and crèche groups, directly accessible from the new hall accommodation.
