THE GATE, THE MEADWAY, READING
The Gate, Reading is an exciting project for a new church and community centre on a site in The Meadway, Reading and will provide a large, welcoming entrance foyer, drop-in café and large, flexible worship space with associated toilets and meeting rooms and storage at ground floor level, with further flexible meeting/ seminar rooms, kitchen and associated storage and toilet facilities at first floor. Flexible offices, prayer room and art studio with associated facilities are located at first floor level.
The design is predominantly two storey, with natural stone walls and standing seam copper roofs which reduce in height to the north to follow the lie of the land. The highly glazed second floor pavilion is set back in the roof zone and solar photovoltaics are incorporated in the roof design, together with north lights to provide high levels of daylighting for the art room and chapel. An extensive sedum roof is incorporated at second floor level to provide visual amenity to the art room, to reduce rainwater run-off and to improve air quality.
The landscape design includes carefully designed parking, with soft planting, a secure play area, sensory garden and sun terrace adjacent to the café.
